    Consider a Workshop for Summer Fun and Recorder Playing Immerse yourself in the world of early music and improve your playing this summer at one of the many workshops being offered by renowned teachers and musical professionals. 
     
    Mountain Collegium from June 28 to July 4 – A weeklong workshop directed by Jody Miller, with programs for all levels of early musicians and folk musicians. It will be held on the campus of Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Registration to Mountain Collegium is now closed. 
     
    Amherst Early Music — Week 1 from July 12 to 19/Week 2 from July 19-26 The Amherst Early Music Festival will be held at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pennsylvania. It offers a bounty of classes, concerts, drop-in sessions, and opportunities for impromptu music making. Gain new skills, insights, and inspiration in classes taught by over 60 faculty members from the United States and Europe. This year the festival focuses on the music of France and England from the 11th to the 18th centuries. To register, go to Amherst Early Music Festival online. 
     
    Next Level Recorder Retreat Southeast from August 23-28 Intensive workshop on technique and ensemble playing, and more, for intermediate to advanced recorder players with Tish Berlin and Frances Blaker in Orkney Springs, Virginia.     Please register here for an on-line session with Gwyn Roberts. The annual business meeting/meet and greet will start at 7pm, and the music session at 7:30.

    Here is a description of Gwyn’s class:

    Handel, the great recyclerHandel repurposed, upcycled and rearranged music throughout his life — he seemingly never met a great tune he couldn’t make into something else. Mostly, he quoted himself, but there was that matter of the suitcase of music that he stole when leaving his first job at the Hamburg Opera. We’ll play movements from two of his concertos for double orchestra that quote his oratorios, a vocal duet in Italian that he wrote right before he wrote Messiah with  all sorts of strangely familiar things in it, and a movement from the Water Music that he swiped from his former boss Keiser — PLUS Keiser’s original. 

    For the registered participants, the music will be sent ahead of the class and the zoom link the day before. 

    Gwyn Roberts, flutist, recorder player and Artistic Director and founder of Tempesta di Mare, has been a featured soloist with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Recitar Cantando of Tokyo, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. She is the director of Early Music at the University of Pennsylvania, and is on the faculty of Peabody Conservatory. A link to her bio is here

    The WRS Spring Recital is Saturday, May 16 from 3-5 pm at St Columba’s Episcopal Church. Those attending the in-person meetings will be playing several pieces. In preparation, the music and videos are here.
